Glycochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry

Samir MESSAOUDI has been a Director of Research at CNRS since 2017. He started his academic career in chemistry in 2001 with a DEA (Diplôme d'Études Approfondies) under the mentorship of Prof. Pascale Moreau at Blaise Pascal University (Clermont-Ferrand, France). He earned his PhD in 2004 under the guidance of Prof. Michelle Prudhomme at SEESIB (UMR 6296, Clermont-Ferrand), focusing on the synthesis of Rebecamycin, Staurosporine, and Granulatimide analogues as potential anticancer agents.
Following his doctoral studies, he undertook a postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. David J. Aitken, working on the total synthesis of Microsclerodermin C. This was followed by a second postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Mouad Alami and Prof. J.-D. Brion at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Châtenay-Malabry (Paris-Sud University). In 2006, he joined CNRS as a Researcher and became part of the "Therapeutic Chemistry" group at the University of Paris 11.
Dr. Messaoudi obtained his Habilitation (HDR) in January 2011. His research primarily focuses on developing innovative catalytic methodologies, including metal-catalyzed cross-couplings, C–H activation, dual photoredox catalysis, and electrocatalysis, for the selective functionalization of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, peptides, and proteins. These cutting-edge chemical tools are employed to design and synthesize bioactive compounds, including anticancer, antiviral, and antibacterial agents.
